Taking a little detour from the more major work I’m doing, I decided to rebuild the old master cylinder. It was in pretty terrible shape: rusted and crusty all over, leaking a lot, and in general disrepair. I got a rebuild kit from Rimmer Bros and a new reservoir and went to work.
I cleaned the body with some degreaser and soap and water, and then hit it with a wire brush and wire wheel. This cleaned up most of the aluminum. I used a flap wheel to clean the sealing surfaces and got rid of most of the casting marks, even though this isn’t really necessary. I cleaned up the pushrod with the wire wheel as well, which took off most of the crud and shined it up a little.
Replacing the seals was pretty straight forward, and then it was just a matter of reassembling. A pretty easy job!
